The Bregenz art museum was opened in 1997 and is nicknamed “KUB”, which both represents the initials of its German name (Kunsthaus Bregenz) and the fact that its building resembles a cube, which unconventially but nonetheless noticeably sits in the middle of this town close to Lake Constance. One should not think of KUB as a typical museum, but rather as a space that offers the framework for contemporary exhibitions, usually especially curated for KUB. Sculptures, installations, performance art or readings - all parts of artistic endeavour are continually being redefined and presented to the public. For a few years now, KUB has started building a permanent collection, not in order to fully represent a specific genre, but rather to reflect the houses’ cultural memory, based on its previous exhibitions.
